A pediatric cardiology team from the Wolfson Medical Center screened hundreds of children’s hearts in Zanzibar and Tanzania in an intense few days in Africa.

251 children were screened in three days in Zanzibar by a joint Israeli-Zanzibar team. Pediatric cardiologist Dr. Sagi Assa, chief pediatric nurse Nava Gershon and echo technician, Yfat Brosh worked in partnership with a local team of doctors and nurses led by Dr. Omar Suleiman, Director and Coordinator of Pediatric Cardiology at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital who was trained by SACH.

In the final day alone the team screened 115 children, an incredible experience as described by Nava.

The team from the Wolfson Medical Center then flew out to Tanzania to complete a three day cardiology clinic at Muhimbili Hospital in Dar al Salam. The clinic was conducted with Dr. Naiz Majani, a Tanzanian pediatric cardiologist who completed her training in SACH in 2014.

In another intense three days the team screened 250 children in Tanzania, including 25 who are post surgery. Dr. Assa demonstrated techniques in invasive cardiology to the Tanzanian cardiologist in the Cath Lab.

This was our first cardiology clinic at the Muhimbili Hospital and discussions were held to evaluate the potential for future collaboration.

With gratitude to General Electric for donating the Echo equipment for this mission.
