Born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Elhme was diagnosed with a life-threatening congenital heart defect at only a few months old.
Born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Elhme was diagnosed with a life-threatening congenital heart defect at only a few months old.
After spending many days in the hospital, Elhme was eventually referred to SACH by Dr. Yayu Mekonnen, Ethiopia’s first pediatric cardiac surgeon trained by SACH. Elhme’s case was deemed critical and inoperable locally. Her condition was very severe.
At the last minute, Elhme was added to a group of 7 other Ethiopian children set to be brought to Israel for life-saving operations that they would not have access to in their home country.
1 in every 100 children are born with a congenital heart defect. In Ethiopia, there is only 1 free pediatric cardiac clinic, so care is extremely limited.
"If she had not come here for the procedure, she wouldn’t have survived."
- Elhme's Mother
Save a Child’s Heart treats children regardless of their race, religion, gender, nationality or financial status. Since our founding, we have helped over 5,400 children from 62 countries. We also bring medical professionals to Israel for training, who can then return home to raise the level of care in their home countries.
In partnership with Israel's Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, we are working to help as many children from developing countries as possible.
